In a remarkable display of compassion, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has extended mercy to 117 convicts currently serving prison terms.
This transformative initiative aims to promote rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
As part of this initiative, 19 inmates will be granted outright freedom, while others will see their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, and several will benefit from reduced sentences.
The decision follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflecting a commitment to second chances within the justice system.
Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, the State Attorney General and Chairman of the Advisory Council, announced the decision in a release.
“The Council’s deliberations were informed by insights from correctional authorities and legal experts, focusing on factors such as the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates,” he stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes set to take effect on October 1, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence celebrations.
This decision is aligned with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Dr. Ajulo emphasized the significance of this act: “The approval for these releases not only represents a step towards mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual.”
This initiative is part of a broader effort to decongest correctional facilities in Ondo State and is a crucial component of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms, highlighting Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to justice and compassion.
