The Ondo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) held a crucial meeting on Thursday, September 19, at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, to address key issues affecting sports development in the state.
The meeting, presided over by SWAN Chairman Segun Giwa, saw members express their displeasure over several ongoing concerns.
Key among the resolutions was the condemnation of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for failing to sponsor any member of the association to the recently concluded National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
Members also expressed frustration over the neglect of various sports associations under the ministry, citing difficulties in accessing budget allocations and obtaining necessary approvals.
The Congress expressed disappointment over the stalled renovation of the Akure Stadium, three months after the contract was awarded by the state government.
They called on Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to personally visit the complex and address the situation, emphasizing the need for urgent repairs to ensure athletes can train and future champions can emerge.
In addition, SWAN urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to appoint a board for the Ondo State Sports Council to foster all-round sports development, as the absence of a board has led to underperformance by various sports associations.
The association commended the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) under the leadership of Hon. Bamidele Ologunloluwa for supporting SWAN with the procurement of a laptop and a three-in-one printer.
The Congress also charged ODSFA to push Sunshine Stars to excel in the current NPFL season and ensure Sunshine Queens return to the elite women’s league.
Finally, SWAN expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for appointing two former SWAN chairmen, Mr. Akintunde Akinsemola and Mr. Lanre Abiodun, to key positions within the Ondo State Football Agency.
The communiqué was signed by the drafting committee led by Jacob Akintunde, with Olasunkanmi Elujoba and Eniola Olurankinse serving as members.
