The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given its nod for the commencement of nine new academic programmes at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA).
This approval takes effect from the 2024/2025 academic session, marking a significant milestone in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence.
The newly approved programmes span across three faculties. In the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, the university will now offer Nursing Science, Public Health, and Medical Laboratory Science. The Faculty of Computing will introduce Cyber Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Information Systems. Additionally, the Faculty of Agriculture will house the new programme in Food Science and Technology.
This landmark approval was communicated to the university in a letter dated 6th September 2024, addressed to AAUA Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige.
The letter, signed by NUC’s Acting Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, confirmed the decision, which followed verification visits by expert panels to assess the institution’s readiness to host the new programmes.
Expressing his delight, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, hailed the development as a significant achievement, remarking:
“This is a fitting icing on the cake of the efforts put into the preparations for the new programmes.”
He added that AAUA is well-equipped with the necessary human, material, and infrastructural resources to run the programmes and ensure that graduates can compete favorably on a global scale.
The university plans to begin admitting qualified candidates into these programmes immediately, starting from this year’s academic session.
Prof. Ige congratulated the entire university community for their contributions, stating:
“We are proud of this, and we thank every stakeholder who has made this possible.”
The new programmes are expected to further enhance AAUA’s reputation as a forward-looking institution committed to academic excellence and innovation.
