Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared a 24-hour curfew across the state following the disastrous turn of the ongoing nationwide protests against hunger and poor governance which has escalated into feud between political rivals in the state.
The governor made the announcement during a press conference held at the Government House on Thursday.
Governor Yusuf addressed the media, stating, “After careful consideration, we have come to terms that a 24-hour curfew should be put in place to further prevent looting and vandalization of businesses and killing of innocent citizens.” The governor emphasized that the decision was necessary to restore order and protect lives and property in the state.
The protests, which began as peaceful demonstrations against hunger, have deteriorated into violent clashes, resulting in significant damage to infrastructure, including the recently targeted Digital Innovation Park in Kano. The facility, intended to support the technical talent accelerator (3MTT) and other educational programs, was set ablaze and looted by protesters earlier this week.
Governor Yusuf has directed all security agencies in the state to ensure full compliance with the curfew directives to facilitate the swift restoration of peace. “We urge all residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and remain indoors until the curfew is lifted,” he added.
