In a move to preempt potential disruptions from nationwide protests against bad governance, the Ekiti State Police Command has issued a directive to raid vulcanizer shops and seize all unused tyres.
This order was communicated through a police wireless message aimed at preventing protesters from using tyres to set fires on highways.
The directive, issued by the Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Ado Ekiti, is in response to instructions received during a recent conference with senior police officials. It mandates that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) conduct midnight raids on vulcanizer shops within their areas of responsibility to confiscate any unused tyres.
As momentum for the End Bad Governance nationwide protest thickens across the country, various security apparatuses have beefed up their machinery and issued personal statements deterring citizens from indulging in any destructive protests.
Additionally, some state governors and non-governmental organizations have pleaded with Nigerians to exercise caution and give the government more time to meet their demands.
In a reconciliatory move to avoid the looming protest, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held meetings with governors, ministers, and other key stakeholders to ensure a peaceful resolution.
Barring a last-minute change, the scheduled protest will commence from the first to the fifteenth of August, 2024, in all 36 states of the country.
