The Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday, made a swift legislative move by passing the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 (Amendment Bill) to implement President Tinubu’s initiative to improve workers’ earnings across the country.
President Tinubu had earlier same day transmitted the National Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly, calling for its prompt consideration and passage.
The bill, which underwent first, second, and third readings in quick succession, was passed by the Senate minutes after a detailed review by the Committee of the Whole.
With the Senate’s approval, the National Minimum Wage Bill is to be reviewed by the House of Representatives. The lower chamber will conduct its own readings and debates on the bill to ensure comprehensive legislative scrutiny before it will be forwarded to President Tinubu for his assent.
Upon receiving presidential assent, the amended National Minimum Wage Act will become law, paving the way for its implementation across various sectors in Nigeria.
