Finidi George, the former Ajax winger, has resigned from his position as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. This announcement was made by former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye through a post on X.com on Saturday.
Finidi George’s resignation comes in the wake of a decision by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a foreign coach to oversee the team, despite George’s recent appointment in May. The decision has sparked significant controversy within the football community.
George, who took over after José Peseiro’s contract ended in February, had served as an assistant coach for 20 months before his promotion. However, the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to a review of his capabilities.
Following the poor results, the NFF decided to demote George, downgrading his one-year contract and slashing his monthly salary from 15 million Naira to 5 million Naira. Additionally, his handpicked assistants were also set to be replaced by the new foreign coach’s team, leaving George with little authority over the squad.
Expressing his frustration, George reportedly met with Sports Minister John Enoh, where he lamented the lack of support from the NFF and raised concerns about the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the qualifiers. This meeting underscored the broader issues within the team and the federation, ultimately leading to George’s decision to step down.
