The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has reportedly suspended Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the Senior Pastor of the City of David parish in Victoria Island, Lagos State. The suspension follows public outcry over the extravagant birthday celebration of his wife, Siji Iluyomade.
On February 18, 2024, Siji Iluyomade’s lavish 60th birthday party sparked controversy, occurring shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank and a prominent member of the church. A video from the event showed popular Nigerian singer Flavour N’abania performing his hit songs, including “Ada Ada,” “Berna,” and “Adamma,” leading to criticism from netizens about the inclusion of a secular artist at a pastor-hosted event.
Sources revealed on Monday that the RCCG Governing Council, after reviewing the matter, decided to suspend Pastor Iluyomade for three months. According to a senior church official, the decision was made to investigate the allegations and concerns raised by the public.
“It was not Pastor Adeboye who suspended him. The governing council decided to suspend him. I think it’s a decision in the right direction,” the source confirmed.
Pastor Iluyomade has been replaced by Pastor Charles Kpandei of RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11. Pastor Kpandei assumed his new role on Sunday.
