Yusuf Ibrahim scored the only goal as Sunshine Stars secured a 1-0 win over Rivers United in their rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League game in Akure on Sunday to boost the Owena Whales survival in the 2023/24 season.
The striker volleyed home the lone goal inside their opponent’s box in the 68th minute after being shut out by the resilient visitors for the most part of the game and ending their recent run of poor form.
Before Sunday, Sunshine have failed to win any of their last four games. The result left them 17th in the table with 39 points, the same as Bayelsa United who are above them on goal difference.
The goal was also Ibrahim’s fourth goal of the campaign, with the striker ascribing the team’s form to sheer luck, adding that they will keep fighting to escape relegation.
“It’s just been luck all these while. We have been playing good football but the results didn’t come. This kind of result is what we need to boost ourselves and we will keep fighting for the remainder of the season to ensure the team stay up,” Ibrahim told sports writers.
Sunshine Stars will now switch focus to their round of 16 Federation Cup meeting with former champions, Plateau United.
