The Senate has suspended Senator Abdul Nengi of the People’s Democratic Party, Representing Bauchi Central over his statement during an interview with BBC Hausa on the Senate padding the 2024 budget to the tune of N3.6 Trillion.
The Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriations Senator Olamilekan Adeola during Plenary on Tuesday, raised a motion for the urgent need to address the false allegations contained Ningi’s interview.
Senator Ningi maintaining his stance on the budget paddling however stirred uproar from his colleagues which resulted in a motion moved by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo South to suspend Nengi from the red chamber for a duration of 12 months.
Reacting, the majority leader of the Senate, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele called for sanction of Ningi with no consideration for apology as his statement was found to be instigating the public against the Senate president.
“Don’t be deceived, the losers of June 2023 Senate President election are still angry. Some have accepted but a few haven’t. They have plotted to remove you before June 2024. That is why you must not allow this deliberate mischief by Ningi to go away. He did it on purpose. He knew he was lying, he set the public against you, he will do it again. We must apply our sanction.”
Following pleas from some lawmakers, the suspension of Abdul Nengi was reduced to 3months against the initial 12 months suspension.
