The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has committed to implementing a new minimum wage of ₦73,000 for civil servants in the state, beginning this November.
Governor Aiyedatiwa made the announcement during the 2024 Public Service Week celebration, an event that included a fitness walk through the state capital, aimed at promoting the well-being of public workers.
Speaking to the crowd of civil servants and labour leaders who gathered at the Government House, the Governor reassured workers that his administration remains dedicated to their welfare, regardless of the upcoming November 16 governorship election.
“The new minimum wage is a settled matter and a testament to our focus on improving the quality of life for Ondo State’s workforce,” Governor Aiyedatiwa stated.
“Anything we have done for civil servants has never been politically driven. If workers are not happy, they won’t be encouraged to put in maximum efforts into their work. That is why we have always prioritised their welfare.”
He explained that a committee was formed to finalize the implementation structure, and now that this work is complete, he will grant the necessary approval to ensure that workers receive their increased wages starting this month.
In addition, Governor Aiyedatiwa pledged to continue prioritizing the welfare of civil servants if elected to a second term.
“If re-elected, I will surpass my own achievements and work to deliver even more for our workforce,” he added, expressing appreciation for the strong show of solidarity from public employees.
Mr. Bayo Philips, the State’s Head of Service, commended the Governor for creating a supportive environment for civil servants, highlighting the administration’s commitment to timely salary payments, regular promotions, and the disbursement of pensions and gratuities.
He assured the gathered crowd that the administration’s dedication to their welfare is consistent and beyond political motivations.
The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Clement Fatuase, also voiced confidence in the Governor’s commitment to supporting workers.
He added, “The civil servants will proudly come forward on November 17 to celebrate your victory,” signaling the labor force’s support for Governor Aiyedatiwa’s re-election.
